Robert Högfeldt 1894-1986

Gustav Robert Högfeldt, born February 13, 1894 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, died June 5, 1986 in Djursholm, was a Swedish cartoonist, graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist.Högfeldt studied painting in Düsseldorf, 1913/17 at the Stockholm Academy and in Paris. He traveled to France and Italy and lived in Stockholm. Högfeldt is particularly known for his humorous pictures and book illustrations such as in Maria Olofsson's book På trollkalas, fairy tales for kind and naughty children.

Högfeldt drew the vignette for the first edition of Frida's book.

Some of his works must today be described as racist. Black people were depicted with the typical attributes of the time, such as giant lips. A drawing titled Misdelivery shows a black child being dropped by the stork down a chimney in a town with only white people. In the watercolor Dangerous Coast, a black girl in a bast skirt dances to attract an unsuspecting sailor, while cannibals wait behind a plank with the pot boiling.

Högfeldt is represented at, among others, the Norrköping Art Museum.
