Severin Nilsson|1846-1918
Johan Severin Nilson, born 14 January 1846 in Asige in Halland, died 24 November 1918 in Stockholm, was a painter, draftsman and photographer. Severin Nilsson was educated at the Art Academy in Stockholm 1865–71 and also studied with Léon Bonnat in Paris for three years. After his academy studies, he painted portraits. He then painted landscapes and also executed history and genre paintings, often with children's motifs and adults with chores. Severin was prolific and left behind a large and varied output.
He participated in several exhibitions and was a member of the Artists' Club in Stockholm and the Swedish Artists' Association. He was also one of the first Swedish documentary photographers in a realistic tradition. Inspired by Artur Hazelius, he carried out photographic studies of folk life, above all in the village of Asige in Halland, where he was born. Nilsson is represented at, among others, the National Museum in Stockholm, Norrköping Art Museum, Kalmar Art Museum and Halland Art Museum.
