Christian Berg | 1893-1976
Sten Sture Christian Berg, born November 27, 1893 in Förslöv. In november 27th 1976 he dies and on the same day his sculpure " Nådens Skålar, Bowls of Grace" is placed at Saint Petri Church in Klippan near his bearth place in Förslöv. The Sculpture was originally placed in 1967 at Nybroplan in Stockholm as on the picture.
Christian Berg has become known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's Painting School in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and worked with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. In 1921, studies in Berlin and Dresden followed and in 1925 a trip to Egypt together with his first wife Anna Berg (née Lindahl). In the same year he settled in Paris.
In 1930 he participated in the Stockholm exhibition and received devastating criticism for his abstract female torso "Monomental figure" cast in granite concrete. The figure was also carved in dark Norwegian granite and purchased by the city of Höganäs. It was unveiled at City Hall in June 1964 in the presence of the artist. In 1939 he moved into his newly built studio at Hallandsåsen.
In the 1940s, he created a number of portraits, which give a stylized image of the face by exaggerating certain moments and shapes. Berg believes that "through my stylization I strengthen the natural impression and give a truer picture of reality than any other eye can detect". Together with his second wife Birgit, he visited Egypt and Greece in 1954 and in 1956 study trips followed to Greece, Asia Minor and Iraq.
In the 1960s, he was found again in Greece, where several sculptures were added with the shell or shell fragment as a source of inspiration. In the years 1965–1966, he created the sculpture Solbåten on behalf of the city of Stockholm, which was to decorate the quay area on western Riddarholmen, today Evert Taube's terrace. The sculpture's boulders came from Idefjorden and initially weighed 16 tons. About the Sun Boat, Berg said: "It is a mother-of-pearl shell shape that I work with, transforming into something I call a sun boat, which in its wind-filled sail shape reflects the sun and the light above, and which, despite its static form, wants to give a vision of progress. A Nike victorious over matter”.
"Creating form is living, someone has said. Nature becomes meaningful to me only to the extent that I can reshape it to express my inner self. Nature is not art. Art is never finished. It is important to search humbly throughout life, to keep one's line clear, to beware of false solutions. In today's art there is so much confusion and obscurity. It is extremely important which message we put forward, that it points in the right direction and that it reaches the people." "My sculptural work is an expression of what grabs and engages me, whether it concerns a peculiar flower, or a tree shape, a stone or a shell fragment on the beach, of which one wants to make poetry, or one wants to transform a figure into a monumental structure , where in the interrelationship of the proportions one tries to bring out something of seriousness and religiosity.”
Berg is recognized internationally and an important abstract sculptor represented at, among others, the National Museum in Stockholm, the Norrköping Art Museum and the Kalmar Art Museum.
In 2023 his sculpture in polished bronze Torso-26 is sold for 1,6 million SEK at Uppsala Auktionskammare.
